Angola: The Weight of History

An excellent, scholarly work - I am ashamed to admit that I didn t know what the word Hegemony meant before I bought this book. And one of the essays in this book is called The Mutation of Hegemonic Domination.... They also assume right from the start that you know what a Lusophone is, so keep your dictionary handy. But once you get over some of the big words, the book is VERY professionally researched and written. By the time you have read it, you wil be as close to understanding Angola as you will ever want to be. This isn t a cheap book though. At over 17 pounds for 233 pages, it is actually the most expensive paperback book I have ever purchased. I would have liked to see more about the present influence of the Chinese in Angola. In fact a chapter on China s role in rebuilding Angola would have been welcome.I know what the word Hegemony means now all right, and it sums up Angola very well. I would say that this book is a very scholarly work, it is a very concise social and economic history of Angola. And what a mess that place is.
